The Best Grandchildren

In 2007, Reb Yisrael Dovid Bringer of Bnei Brak was hospitalized with critical heart failure. Doctors warned his family that survival was extremely unlikely — only a handful of patients with his condition ever recovered.

When Reb Yisrael Dovid’s son asked the doctor about his father’s chances, the doctor replied solemnly:

“This is not a matter of percentage; this is a matter of life and death. Accept it. And face reality.”

Despite this, the family did not give up. They kept davening and placing their trust in Hashem, who could do anything.

The recovery of Reb Yisrael Dovid left all the doctors in shock. Within a week, he was transferred out of the ICU, an outcome that defied all expectations.

To explain the miracle, Reb Yisrael Dovid’s son shared a story with the doctor about Ariel Sharon’s son. After the Prime Minister suffered a stroke, his son searched for anyone who had recovered from a similar disease and found one elderly tzaddik in Geula.

When the Prime Minister’s son visited the tzaddik, he asked:

“So how did you get out of it yourself? Which medication did you take? It must’ve been something better than what the hospital is offering my father. Please enlighten me.”

The tzaddik replied:

“It’s something that you cannot do.”

The Prime Minister’s son pressed on, grinning:

“I can’t do? Whatever you did, I will do for my father.”

The tzaddik responded:

“The idea is irrelevant for your father — I can’t assist you any further.”

The visitor insisted:

“Don’t you understand with whom you are dealing? The Prime Minister of the nation. We would do anything, and everything. We will fly him to any state-of-the-art facility, pay out-of-pocket for the best doctors. Nothing is beyond our grasp.”

With two hot tears in his eyes, the tzaddik revealed the secret:

“Tell me, does your father have 60 grandchildren who can plea to Hashem to spare him? I do. I have 60 grandchildren who, from the day I fell ill, did not stop davening on my behalf — that is the source of my recovery, Hashem who is the true healer.”

Reb Yisrael Dovid himself had 130 grandchildren and great-grandchildren who davened unceasingly for his recovery. This reminds us that Hashem is the only One in control and is our only source of Yeshuah —we must do our part and turn to Him and Him alone.
